Ranni's Dark Moon is one of the most powerful Legendary Sorceries available in Elden Ring, offering impressive magical damage and debuffing capabilities for intelligence-focused spellcasters. Acquiring this spell requires completing a substantial portion of Lunar Princess Ranni's intricate questline to gain access to a hidden plateau in Liurnia. Once unlocked, it becomes an indispensable tool for boss encounters and difficult endgame scenarios.

How to Find Ranni's Dark Moon

To reach the location containing Ranni's Dark Moon, players must progress through Ranni's storyline until reaching the Moonlight Altar plateau above Liurnia. In the southwestern region of this plateau stands Chelona's Rise, a locked tower guarded by a seal that requires solving a puzzle involving three giant phantom turtles. After seeking three wise beasts across the area and defeating them, the seal dissolves, granting access to the chest at the top containing the spell.

Stat Requirements and Memory Slots

Casting Ranni's Dark Moon requires a high investment in Intelligence, needing a minimum stat requirement of 68. Additionally, the spell occupies two memory slots, meaning sorcerers need sufficient Attunement or slot-increasing items to equip it alongside their main arsenal. Due to these steep prerequisites, it is primarily designed for pure intelligence builds in late-game setups.

Spell Effects and Combat Utility

When cast, the sorcerer summons a massive full moon that absorbs incoming enemy spells while tracking toward its target before exploding. Upon impact, the spell inflicts heavy Magic Damage and builds up Frostbite on the target, making it especially effective against enemies susceptible to cold status effects. Crucially, the explosion reduces the target's Magic Damage negation by 10 percent for one full minute, allowing subsequent sorceries to deal significantly higher damage.

Comparison with Rennala's Full Moon

While similar in appearance to Rennala's Full Moon, Ranni's Dark Moon is generally preferred by endgame sorcerers due to its added Frostbite effect. Both spells lower enemy magic resistance, but the cold buildup provided by Ranni's version can trigger chunk damage when Frostbite activates. Combining this debuff with fast-casting spells like Comet or Night Comet maximizes total damage output during major encounters.
